Grandma’s Crock-Pot Sloppy Joes

Sloppy JoesThere’s something nostalgic about sloppy joes. And if you know me at all, or have been following along here, you know that I’m a sap. Something about this sandwich brings me right back to sitting on the living room floor for a “picnic” with my sister.

This recipe comes courtesy of my late great-grandmother, sent to me by my grandpa after last year’s Memorial Day party (thanks, Grandpa!). Until the party, I hadn’t devoured one of these sloppy joes in years, yet somehow, after one bite of my sloppy joe at the party, that familiar flavor brought me right back to childhood.

Who else feels sentimental over food? Just me?

This recipe is extremely easy and delicious for a party (Super Bowl, anyone?), weeknight dinner, or your kids’ living room picnic. Or your own living room picnic, if that’s what you’re feeling. No judgement here.


Makes 4-6 servings

  • 1 ½ lbs. ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • 2 stalks celery, minced
  • 1 12-oz. bottle chili sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • ⅛ teaspoon pepper


In skillet, brown the beef or turkey with onion and celery. Drain. Combine all ingredients in slow cooker. Cook on low for 3-4 hours. Serve on whatever buns you like and top with cheddar cheese, if you so desire.
